Former President Donald Trump has been acquitted from in his second impeachment trial, after a vote determined that he was not guilty of inciting the deadly capitol riot.
There were 7 Republicans who joined the 50 Democrats voting against the former president, but it wasn’t enough to create the 2/3 majority required to convict.
As of today, Trump is the only President in U.S. history to ever be impeached twice and the first to be tried by the Senate when he was out of office.
Senator Mitch McConnell gave a statement after the vote on the Senate floor, saying:
“Anyone who decries his awful behavior is accused of insulting millions of voters. That is an absurd deflection,” McConnell added. “Seventy-four million Americans did not invade the Capitol. Hundreds of rioters did. Seventy-four million Americans did not engineer the campaign of disinformation and rage that provoked it. One person did. Just one. “
