RIT Student Assists In Solving 90 Year Old Math Problem

David Narváez, a doctoral student at RIT and his team of researchers have made mathematic history, solving a 90 year old math problem called Keller’s Conjecture.

Narváez used his knowledge of information sciences, computing and symmetry-breaking to assist a group of computers solve the problem in 30 minutes.

In addition, he brought techniques that made the answer verifiable by computer programs.

“The problem with these kinds of mathematical objects is they’re highly structured, with many similarities,” Narváez said. “There are a lot of calculations that can be avoided if you take into account those symmetries. But the computer logic doesn’t know that, so it repeats a lot of work.”
