Asheville City Council Approves Reparations For Black Residents

On Tuesday night, officials in the city of Asheville, North Carolina voted unanimously on a resolution that would give reparations to the Black residents of the city.
The idea to pay reparations in Asheville has been tossed around for a long time, but after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, lawmakers decided it was time for the city to apologize for the role it played in slavery and racist policies.
The resolution doesn’t say it will pay cash to residents directly, but will instead “form policy and programs that will establish the creation of generational wealth and address reparations due in the black community.”
Other members of the city council, like Sheneika Smith, think improvements could be made to the resolution.
She voiced her concern, saying:
“We need to bring a red pen to the table to actually circle expenditures and really show how they related to the stated goals.”
