Rochester among regions scheduled to re-open on Friday

Written by on May 13, 2020

While at the Rochester Regional Health auditorium, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that Rochester was one of several sites in the Rochester-Finger Lakes nine-county region that had passed a checklist of goals/requirements for Phase 1 re-opening. This will be the first time since March 20 that certain businesses have been allowed to re-open their locations to the public.

To meet the state criteria, counties had to guarantee a certain amount of available space and equipment in regional hospitals, expanded virus testing and contact tracing, and positive outcomes in regards to the number of cases and deaths. Currently, the only businesses allowed to re-open during Phase 1 are in the non-essential agriculture, construction, fishing, forestry, manufacturing, and wholesale categories. Retailers may re-open as well, but they can only offer curbside pickup and delivery services. Some recreational activities will also be permitted, such as drive-in movies, tennis, gardening and landscaping.

In the Rochester-Lakes region, re-opening oversight is conducted by Robert Duffy, the former New York Lieutenant Governor and current Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce head, Danny Wegman, Chairman of Wegmans’ Food Markets, and various regional leaders. They are positioned to guarantee that businesses and others continue to follow state social distancing guidance.

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello commented that he was “delighted” by the news. He noted that he wasn’t surprised given “unprecedented public support and government coordination” throughout the region.
