Rochester leader picked to help state with re-opening plans

On Tuesday, April 28, current Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, and former state lieutenant governor Bob Duffy provided more details to the public about his new role helping Governor Andrew Cuomo and others come up with a plan to re-open the state. He was assigned by the governor to provide advice about re-opening the Rochester and Finger Lakes regions.

Duffy has received feedback from local business leaders and health officials. As Duffy explained: “Everything we do is based on health and safety. And that’s why the medical directors, health directors around the region play a major role. But my role is simply to gather information and provide it.”

He understands that business leaders are doing what they can to enact safety measures and change their workflow processes. Duffy reiterated that they need to prepare for delays: “My sense is always be proactive — don’t wait for somebody to say, ‘We’re going to be open, if you have a plan.’ Then you’re delayed by two or three or four weeks. I’d be working on that right now, and paramount has to be, the safety of employees and the safety of customers.”

Duffy also emphasized that business owners should continue to try to have as many employees as possible work remotely for the foreseeable future. Officials hope to begin phased re-opening of the state by May 15.
