Disney artist shows off talent with animated hip hop legends

Alex Alvarado usually spends his days creating artwork for Walt Disney Animation Studios as a look development (lookdev) artist and supervisor. Recently, while furloughed during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, Alvarado decided to share on the ArtStation platform what he thought popular hip hop legends might look like if they were animated characters. So far, he has created renderings of Ice Cube, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dog, and Tupac Shakur.
On Friday, April 17, Ice Cube shared the artwork via his Twitter account with the words “This is crazy…” after noticing that his username with his animated picture was tagged by a former music journalist named Quibián Salazar-Moreno. Alvarado was as faithful as possible with his creations: The animated Ice Cube wears an L.A. Dodgers ball cap; Lamar wears a sweatshirt that features a mild “dang” across the front; and Tupac wears a dazzling gold chain necklace and cross.
The tweet resulted in Twitter users sharing their own art. It also generated a variety of ideas about how Alvarado’s art might be used in an actual animated film, including names of television and streaming networks that could make it happen. As of Monday, April 20, the tweet received over 110 thousand likes. It had also been shared over 16,000 times.
Alvarado posted other animated real people and fictional characters, including basketball player LeBron James, Jon Snow from Game of Thrones, and even some Muppets. According to his LinkedIn profile, Alvarado has a BFA from the Columbus College of Art & Design and has worked for Disney for more than eight years.
