When two mixed breed traditional meals combine as one, you’ve got yourself a heck of a good meal. Making an appearance in pop culture, chili dogs have kept families satisfied and full for years.

Going from different countries and states, nobody really knows where chili originated from. Although legend claims that the dish originated from the Canary Islands which is located right outside of the coast of Africa. While on the other hand, we have the 19th century dish originating from Germany called the wiener-frankfurter. It would be a while before us Americans named it the hot dog, which comes from the idea of the sausage (sausages have been around since the 13th century). One day in the 1870’s, a German immigrant set up the first outdoor hot dog stand in Coney Island, New York.

This odd couple of food would be presented in the menu of Sonic Drive-In, a popular American restaurant that opened up in the year 1953. The name “Sonic” was chosen because it means the speed of sound and sound waves, meaning they were trying to give their customers good food in a short amount of time. This is also the reason why the creators behind Sega named their hedgehog mascot Sonic.

If you’ve never had a chili dog you may want to consider it. Two meals with different roots that, together, have now become a traditional American dish for you to try anytime at home or on the go.
