Extended winter break: Where to turn for child care in Rochester

Written by on December 9, 2024

With an extended winter break on the horizon, parents in Rochester may be seeking childcare solutions to keep their children engaged during the extra time off from school. Several local organizations are stepping up to provide safe and enriching activities for kids.

The City of Rochester’s R-Centers will operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the break, offering free breakfast, lunch, and activities like sledding and hockey. Registration is not required, and programming integrates academic skills through play. “You’re learning while playing,” says Dr. Shirley Green, Commissioner of Recreation and Human Services.

The Boys and Girls Club of Rochester is also gearing up for an active holiday season with events including a Kwanzaa celebration, a movie outing, and a bowling trip. “It’s a place of peace, safety, and belonging,” notes Director of Program Operations Tysy Hughes.

These initiatives ensure kids have a fun, secure environment during their extended holiday while alleviating daycare concerns for parents. For more details, visit the R-Centers or Boys and Girls Club websites.
