Swing-state priest teaches ancient techniques for surviving today’s political turmoil

Rev. David Peck, pastor of St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, offers a series called “Contemplative Citizenship,” teaching techniques to navigate political conflict through meditation and prayer. Peck’s weekly gatherings help participants from varied faith backgrounds respond thoughtfully rather than reacting with anger or frustration to political disputes. By focusing on the breath and repetitive phrases, attendees build what Peck calls “spiritual muscles,” enabling them to approach political discussions with humility and compassion.

Each session integrates different spiritual traditions, such as the Christian Lord’s Prayer, the Hindu use of mantras, and the Metta Prayer from Buddhist practice, all aimed at helping individuals gain calm and perspective amidst divisive political issues.

Peck emphasized that contemplative practices don’t require abandoning political convictions but rather allow individuals to approach political debates with humility and respect. His approach draws on the wisdom of historical leaders like Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., highlighting that contemplative prayer and meditation can form the basis of a democratic and compassionate engagement with others, even in times of high tension. Through shared meditative practices, Peck aims to foster a community capable of reconciling differences and promoting democratic engagement.
