Wildfire smoke blankets the region and covers the skies over Rochester

Wildfire smoke from Canada has created a thick haze over Rochester, New York, and extends across the region from New York to Maine. The smoke, originating from wildfires in Alberta and Saskatchewan, has traveled over a thousand miles via the jet stream. As of July 22, 2024, there are hundreds of active fires, categorized by their status: “out of control”, “being held”, and “under control”n.
Despite the widespread smoke, air quality has not been affected at ground level yet. The fires persist due to extremely hot and dry conditions in western Canada. While forest management practices influence wildfire behavior, climate change also plays a significant role.
