Teenager’s Body Pulled from Erie Canal in Newark

In Newark, New York, a 17-year-old boy drowned in the Erie Canal. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred on Monday night near Main Street and Van Buren Street. The teenager reportedly jumped into the canal and failed to resurface. Despite the efforts of a passerby who attempted a rescue, the teen could not be saved. Newark firefighters later recovered the boy’s body from the canal. The Newark Central School District, where the victim was a student at Newark High School, is offering counseling services to students in response to the tragedy. Authorities have stated that there were no suspicious circumstances observed at the scene, although the investigation remains active.
