U.S. Olympic swim trials make history

The U.S. Olympic swim trials in Indianapolis have been historic, marked by record-breaking performances and significant comebacks. Gretchen Walsh set a new world record in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 55.18 seconds, surpassing the previous record set by Sweden’s Sarah Sjöström in 2016. Walsh, a 21-year-old from Nashville, secured her spot on the U.S. Olympic team after winning the national championship in the same event.

Carson Foster also secured a place on the team after a previous disappointment in 2021, winning the men’s 400-meter individual medley. Legendary swimmer Katie Ledecky, with seven Olympic golds, proved she is still dominant by winning the women’s 400-meter freestyle by nearly four seconds.

The trials have drawn unprecedented crowds, with over 20,000 fans attending on Saturday night at the converted Lucas Oil NFL stadium. The event continues through June 23, setting records for the largest audience ever for a swimming competition in the U.S.
