New bill requiring warning signs for firearm sales passed in the NYS legislature

The New York State Senate and Assembly have passed a bill mandating warning signs in stores that sell or repair firearms. These signs inform customers that having a firearm at home significantly increases risks of suicide, lethal domestic violence, and accidental deaths, especially involving children. The warning message emphasizes the heightened danger and provides the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number (988) for those in distress. The bill requires signs to be prominently displayed at store entrances, near firearm sales areas, and in additional locations within the store. Additionally, a copy of this warning must be given or shown to all buyers.

The warning says:
“Access to a weapon or firearm in the home significantly increases the risk of suicide, death during domestic disputes, and/or unintentional deaths to children, household members and others. If you or a loved one is experiencing distress and/or depression, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988.”
