The 13th annual Dr. Lemuel and Gloria Rogers African American Health Symposium recently focused on Alzheimer’s and dementia among African Americans in Rochester, N.Y. This symposium aimed to raise awareness about the higher incidence of these cognitive disorders in the African American community, which is reported to be twice as likely to experience Alzheimer’s and dementia compared to the general population. During the event, Arlene Wilson from the Alzheimer’s Association highlighted the importance of a healthy lifestyle in potentially slowing the progression of these diseases. Key recommendations included healthy eating, physical activity, social engagement, and mental challenges as preventative measures against cognitive decline. The Alzheimer’s Association also emphasized its availability, offering round-the-clock support and resources for those affected by these conditions.
