Rochester City Council Calls for Kia and Hyundai Recall
Written by Site Hub on February 22, 2024
The Rochester City Council has unanimously passed a resolution urging the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) to recall Hyundai and Kia vehicles due to a significant design flaw. This flaw, present in models from 2011 to 2022, makes these vehicles particularly susceptible to theft, a problem exacerbated by social media platforms like TikTok, where videos demonstrating how to steal these cars have circulated widely. The issue has disproportionately affected working-class families, who are more likely to own these affordable models. In response to inquiries about the lack of recall, the NHTSA stated that the issue falls under law enforcement due to its criminal nature. However, the agency has been in discussions with Hyundai and Kia since 2022 to address the theft vulnerability and is working to enhance vehicle safety while keeping local authorities informed of any developments.
