A Fireball Exploded In The Sky Between Rochester And Syracuse Yesterday

Written by on December 3, 2020

Yesterday, the American Meteor Society announce that it had received over 40 reports of a giant fireball in the sky. Reports of a fireball in the sky came in from Washington D.C. to Canada, but in upstate NY, they included a giant “boom” as well.

The boom was so loud that Syracuse Police thought there may have been an explosion in the area and were trying to track it down.

Apparently the meteor was bright enough to be picked up by on of NASA’s weather satellites, and it sent the data over to NASA’s Meteor Watch Group. They confirmed the incident on Facebook, saying:

“A large meteoroid entered Earth’s atmosphere over upper New York, between Rochester and Syracuse.”

The site said the meteor was clocked traveling westward at 56,000 miles per hour and broke into pieces at an altitude of about 22 miles, “producing a bright flash seen by the public and cameras in the area.”

“The shock waves from the disruption also produced ‘booms’ heard by many in the area. Unfortunately only one video of the actual meteor has surfaced, so it is currently not possible to establish an orbit for this object; the slow speed suggests an asteroidal origin.”
