After being surrounded by a raging wildfire, twenty three hikers and three dogs were rescued by helicopter in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains earlier today.
According to the county Office of Emergency Management, the The Ice Fire in San Juan County began burning Monday afternoon in the South Mineral Creek area near a trail head in the San Juan National Forest.
Greg Anson said he was on a day hike to Ice Lake when he saw a huge plume of smoke. He and the other hikers met up and decided it would be safer to call for help, rather than try to navigate the wildfire.
“Some people didn’t think they could make it,” he said. “It was crazy. I’ve never been through anything like that.”
