17-Year-Old Kamora Freeland Becomes New York’s Youngest Black Female Pilot

Written by on February 6, 2025

Kamora Freeland, a 17-year-old Staten Island native, has made history as New York’s youngest Black female pilot after earning her private pilot’s license last year. Currently attending Spelman College, she skipped her freshman year after earning enough college credits in high school to begin as a sophomore.

Freeland’s achievements extend beyond aviation—she is also a certified birthing doula and lifeguard. Despite her many talents, flying remains her greatest passion. She credits a scholarship program, which her mother enrolled her in, as the launchpad for her aviation career.

“It’s definitely amazing,” Freeland told ABC 7, expressing her hope to inspire other young Black girls to follow in her footsteps.

Balancing academics and her growing aviation career, Freeland continues to break barriers, proving that age is no limit to ambition.
