Historic $50M donation by Tom Golisano to establish new institute at URMC

Written by on June 16, 2024

Billionaire philanthropist Tom Golisano has donated $50 million to the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) to establish the Golisano Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Institute. This is the largest single gift in the university’s history and Golisano’s most significant donation. The new institute will consolidate URMC’s programs and services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) into a single, state-of-the-art location. The institute aims to become the most advanced and well-integrated IDD center in the nation, addressing fragmented care and improving access to comprehensive services. John Foxe, director of URMC’s Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience, will lead the new institute. This donation follows Golisano’s history of supporting IDD initiatives, including the Golisano Autism Center. The new institute will enhance patient care, offer specialized equipment, and increase medical staff, setting a global standard for IDD care.
