“Two Dollar Whore”?

Bishop Patrick Wooden sermon footage began circulating online after the COGIC bishop publicly criticized Pastor Jamal Bryant over how he presented his wife during church. From the pulpit, Wooden described seeing a preacher introduce his wife while she wore what he called a black and flesh colored dress that, in his words, created the illusion that she was not wearing anything underneath. He said he later heard the preacher defend the look by explaining that he bought the dress himself and suggesting that critics simply had not “been anywhere.”

That explanation did not sit well with Wooden. During the sermon, he stated that his objection was not to the woman wearing the dress but to the man who chose to present his wife that way. He stressed that distinction repeatedly, saying his statement was about the husband’s actions, not the wife herself.

Still, the language used in the critique immediately drew attention. Wooden said that the way the wife was presented made her appear like “a two dollar whore,” then clarified that he was not calling her that, but describing how the presentation came across. He emphasized that the words he referenced about purchasing the dress came directly from the preacher himself.

Wooden went on to question what kind of places a pastor would have to visit to believe such a presentation was appropriate, saying he had no desire to go anywhere that shaped that type of thinking. He framed the moment as an issue of decency and responsibility, especially for men who lead congregations.

He then contrasted the situation with his own marriage, explaining that his wife would never agree to wear something like that in public, regardless of his opinion. According to Wooden, his wife might choose to wear something revealing at home, away from public view and away from grandchildren, but not at an event where everyone could see.
