Utah’s New Law Bars Extreme DUI Offenders From Buying Alcohol

Written by on January 6, 2026

Starting Jan. 1, Utah will enforce a new law banning people convicted of extreme DUI from buying alcohol and requiring ID checks for every alcohol purchase statewide.

Some offenders will receive IDs marked with a red “no alcohol sale” banner, shifting enforcement responsibility to businesses.

While lawmakers say the goal is to prevent repeat drunk driving, some bar and restaurant workers worry the policy adds pressure on staff, slows service, and risks penalties for businesses if someone is mistakenly served.
