URMC: Patients cared for in hallway as hospitals reach capacity
Written by Site Hub on January 29, 2025
Hospitals in Rochester, including Strong Hospital at URMC, are operating beyond capacity, with more than 120% of licensed beds occupied. Due to the surge in flu, COVID-19, and RSV cases, some patients are receiving care in hallways as hospital staff struggle to manage the influx.
Dr. Michael Apostolakos of URMC reported over 30 flu patients and more than 50 respiratory illness cases currently admitted, adding to severe congestion. The situation has worsened due to a shortage of skilled nursing facility beds, causing a backlog of over 100 patients and overcrowding in emergency departments.
Healthcare leaders urge those with flu-like symptoms to avoid hospitals when possible and instead use telehealth services or urgent care centers. However, patients experiencing severe symptoms such as strokes, heart attacks, or breathing difficulties will still receive priority emergency care.
URMC is working with Monroe County and the state hospital association to find solutions to improve patient care during this crisis. So far, 24 flu-related deaths have been reported in Monroe County this season.
