unregulated government drones raise privacy concerns

A new report from the New York Civil Liberties Union reveals a dramatic 65% increase in government-operated drones across New York State over the past two years. With 876 drones now registered—508 of which are controlled by law enforcement—the NYCLU raises concerns about unregulated aerial surveillance. The report warns that these drones, many equipped with night vision and facial recognition capabilities, pose significant risks to privacy and civil liberties. The NYPD alone expanded its fleet from 19 to 99 drones. The NYCLU is urging lawmakers to mandate search warrants for surveillance, prohibit weaponized drones, and enforce transparency around drone data retention. The group argues that current practices lack oversight and offer little public safety benefit, citing potential for abuse.
