United States Postal Service Eyes Stamp Prices Near $1
Written by DJ Sight on March 18, 2026
The United States Postal Service may soon push the cost of mailing a letter close to $1—and it’s a sign of deeper trouble.
At a recent hearing, Postmaster General David Steiner said first-class stamps could rise from 78 cents to as much as 90–95 cents. Why? The USPS is bleeding money, reporting a $9 billion loss in 2025, with mail volume continuing to decline.
Steiner made it clear: the agency is running out of options. Like any business, it can only raise prices, cut costs, or grow revenue—and right now, price hikes are front and center. Without major changes, he warned, the Postal Service could run out of cash within a year.
Beyond stamp increases, USPS is also looking to borrow more and rethink how it invests its pension funds to stay afloat.
Bottom line: that everyday stamp might soon cost a lot more—and it reflects a system under real financial strain.
