TSA Expands Screener Support to Ease Airport Congestion

The Transportation Security Administration has significantly increased its flexible workforce, preparing for record-breaking summer travel volumes. Nearly 1,000 TSA employees have volunteered to deploy to crowded airports as needed, more than quadrupling last year’s numbers. TSA Administrator David Pekoske announced the update near Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, anticipating some airports will surpass 2019 passenger levels. The agency’s goal is to minimize wait times—targeting less than 30 minutes for standard lanes and under 10 minutes for PreCheck. With airlines planning aggressive summer schedules and international travel still lagging post-pandemic, staffing flexibility is key to avoiding bottlenecks. The TSA currently screens over 2.1 million travelers daily, and some airlines have already scaled back operations over labor concerns. Despite ongoing challenges, Pekoske stated the TSA is as prepared “as it possibly can be” for what could be a high-pressure travel season.
