Trump Says Funding Cuts to Sanctuary States Will Begin Feb. 1

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that starting Feb. 1, his administration will deny federal funding to states that contain sanctuary cities, expanding earlier threats aimed only at local governments.

Announced during a Detroit Economic Club speech, Trump offered no details on which funds would be cut, saying only that the impact would be “significant.” Courts previously blocked similar efforts, and “sanctuary city” has no formal legal definition but generally refers to limits on cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
