“Spend Dat” Boycott Debate, India Arie Sets The Record Straight On

Written by on July 3, 2026

India Arie response video is cutting through the noise after the Grammy winning singer pushed back on reports that she wanted people to boycott Yung Miami’s viral single “Spend Dat.” In a video posted to her Substack, India said, “I don’t think anybody needs to boycott. I think people just need to make choices for themselves.” The July 1 video was titled “CLARITY. COERCION. CELEBRATION!!” and also marked the 20 year anniversary of her 2006 album “Testimony Vol. 1: Life & Relationship.” That clarification came after India’s comments about “Spend Dat” turned into a larger online debate.  India first reacted on Threads after a post connected the song’s success to a broader cultural conversation. “Spend Dat,” which was released in April, had reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sparked a crowd singalong when Yung Miami appeared at the 2026 BET Awards.
