RPD Chief David Smith said the suspect took his own life after the shooting. According to Smith, the man pulled out a gun and shot himself after a drone shone a light on him, as he was hiding in a brush pile on Lake Avenue.

The officer was shot on Lake Avenue near Driving Park Avenue around 1 a.m. Police say the officer got out of his patrol car and approached the man, as he was walking, to question him about a recent shooting.

“Those injuries have been determined to be non-life-threatening. He’s in good spirits right now, receiving additional treatment,” Bello said.

Bello said he didn’t know exactly why the officer stepped out of his car to talk to the person. News10NBC saw two police cruisers outside of Rochester General Hospital about an hour after the shooting.
