Rochester Man Uses Basketball to Keep Kids Off the Streets

Written by on June 10, 2025

Malcolm Jenkins, founder and coach of the Roc City Warriors, is using basketball to change lives in Rochester, NY. Starting with just five kids in February, his program has grown to 30 players ranging from third to ninth grade. Practices are held three evenings a week at School 17’s gym. Jenkins, who funds the program with his wife, emphasizes discipline, teamwork, and long-term goals over dreams of the NBA. He sees his gym as a refuge from street violence and a springboard toward college and productive adulthood. “You can’t save the neighborhood by saving adults… you start with the kids,” he said. Jenkins is accepting donations and welcomes visitors who want to support his mission.
