Mayor Malik D. Evans and the Rochester City School District presented a certificate and special prize to local student, Avery Cater, for their winning artistic submission to the Mayors for Peace Children’s Art Competition. The certificate and prize were awarded in December by the Mayors for Peace Secretariat in Hiroshima, Japan.

“I am very proud of Avery’s accomplishment, which not only highlights the talent of this young artist but also celebrates their impactful message to be the light in the dark,” said Mayor Evans. “And to be the only submission selected from the United States for a winning prize is amazing. It’s an incredible achievement and a testament to the young visionaries who are part of our community.”

Every fall, the Mayors for Peace Children’s Art Competition invites young artists, ages 6 to 15, from member cities to submit artwork reflecting their interpretation of “What Peace Means to Me.” Artwork was submitted and reviewed in the fall, and winners were announced in mid-December. Out of thousands of submissions, 52 winners – including Avery’s – were selected this year. The competition is in its eighth year.

Rochester is one of more than 8,500 member cities from 166 countries that participate in Mayors for Peace. This initiative aims to promote a peaceful world free of nuclear weapons through education and fostering a peace-seeking spirit. For more information and to view winning artwork, visit Mayors for Peace Children’s Art Competition.
