Proposed Bill Would Increase Bottle & Can Deposit in NY

Earlier this week, a proposed bill titled “Bigger, Better Bottle Bill” introduced by Senator Rachel May, would increase the deposit for cans and bottles to 10 cents from 5 cents. The increase in revenue would be worth an estimated $170 to $350 million for the New York State Environmental Protection Fund, which Sen. May said will be reinvested into the New York environment.
Senator May stated: “A lot of people don’t return their bottles and for those people, it would look like an increase and that’s a reason why some retailers and some of the bottling facilities are concerned about this bill.”
