Police: Rochester Homeowner Shoots, Kills Suspect Trying to Break Into Home

A homeowner on Avery Street in Rochester fatally shot a man who was allegedly attempting to break into his home early Monday morning, according to Rochester Police.

Police responded around 4:15 a.m. to the 300 block of Avery Street near Emerson Street after reports of the shooting. Investigators say the homeowner was awakened by someone trying to force entry through the back door. The homeowner, who is legally licensed to possess the handgun used in the shooting, is cooperating with the investigation.

The suspected intruder was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors told police the neighborhood has experienced several burglaries in recent weeks. The incident remains under investigation.
