Over 500 Rochester Women Came Together In Unity & Sisterhood

Written by on April 23, 2016

On Saturday morning the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park resembled a sea of white splendor, as over 500 women, dressed in denim bottoms and white tops, came together for what might be one of Rochester’s largest female gatherings. The iROC 100 Women Photo Shoot was an idea created by local youth activist Camille McIntyre. McIntyre formed a Facebook group where she invited women of various cultural and ethnic backgrounds to participate in her movement. Her goal was to bring women of Rochester together to unify and empower.

“My inspiration behind this shoot is fueled by wanting to re-shape and redesign the perception of ‘women.’ This shoot will break barriers of color, socioeconomic class, religions, ethnic backgrounds and more. The media has a tendency of displaying the notion that women won’t support each other without tearing them down first. I want to deconstruct that connotation of female degradation and showcase the power of women standing together in uniformity regardless of differences and intellect.
I can longer sit back and watch women be inspired and influenced by the likes of reality tv celebrities who utilize their platform for worthless gain and empty validation.

My sincere hope and purpose is fostering a sense of esteem, pride, empowerment, self-worth, image and strength. As women, we have to pride ourselves on becoming better individuals and leaders so we can work collectively to illuminate positive influence within our families, young girls and local communities. This photo shoot will set a precedent of symbolizing the unity between sisters.”

Camille A. McIntyre

McIntyre hopes on making this event an annual experience.
