Ryan Coogler’s Sinners won four Oscars at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Best Original Screenplay for Ryan Coogler, Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, and Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson. Jordan became the sixth Black actor in Oscar history to win Best Actor in a Leading Role, joining Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith. Arkapaw made history as the first woman ever to win Best Cinematography, and the first person of African American or Filipino descent to do so. Set in 1932 Mississippi during Jim Crow, the film earned a record 16 nominations — the most in Oscar history. Coogler’s Original Screenplay win was his first Oscar, arriving 13 years after he and Jordan first collaborated on Fruitvale Station.
