NYers can get free college tuition for in-demand fields

Governor Kathy Hochul has expanded New York’s tuition-free college program to include more in-demand career fields, now covering students aged 25 to 55. The initiative, which began in July 2025, is designed to attract workers into fields with critical shortages. Over 11,000 students have already enrolled, receiving free tuition, books, fees, and supplies toward an associate degree.
Newly added fields include air traffic control, transportation logistics, emergency management, and nursing degrees. These join existing focus areas like advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, engineering, green energy, and teaching in shortage areas. Hochul called the program a meaningful opportunity for adults seeking a career shift and for addressing urgent workforce gaps across the state.
