Written by on January 13, 2026

New York State is holding over $400 million in unclaimed funds for people in the Finger Lakes region.

This includes forgotten bank accounts, uncashed insurance checks, stock certificates, and unused gift cards.

Banks make up nearly 40% of the total, and unused gift cards—now a growing source—accounted for about $28 million last year.

Residents can search for their unclaimed money through the State Comptroller’s Office.
