Newark Mayor Baraka Arrested at ICE Detention Center Protest

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested Friday at the newly opened Delaney Hall ICE detention center, where he and others had been protesting the facility’s operation by GEO Group. Baraka was reportedly denied entry to a tour with New Jersey congressional members, after which he attempted to cross the gate, leading to a confrontation and arrest. The Department of Homeland Security accused Baraka and others of illegally entering the premises, calling it a political stunt. The center, which has a $1B contract, is part of Trump’s plan to expand detention capacity nationwide. Baraka has been a vocal opponent, citing permit violations and humanitarian concerns.
