New York Targets Distracted Driving in Weeklong Crackdown

Written by on April 7, 2026

New York State Police are ramping up enforcement for distracted driving with the “Put the Phone Away or Pay” campaign from April 6–13. Troopers will use both marked and unmarked vehicles to catch drivers using electronic devices behind the wheel.

Distracted driving remains dangerous, causing over 3,200 deaths nationwide in 2024, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Fines increase for repeat offenses, and young drivers face stricter penalties.

The message is simple: put the phone away, stay focused, and drive safely.
