Written by on December 23, 2025

Holiday travel is expected to break records this Christmas week, with 122.4 million people traveling at least 50 miles through Jan. 1, according to AAA. Nearly 90% will drive, while 6.6% will fly.

AAA advises travelers to plan ahead and expect delays, especially from weather or crashes. Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day are expected to have lighter traffic.

For Tuesday, Dec. 23, the best time to travel is before 10 a.m., and the worst is 1–7 p.m. Some routes, like NYC to the Hamptons, could see traffic increase by 90%.
