NASA Conducts First Medical Evacuation from Space Station

NASA carried out its first-ever medical evacuation from the International Space Station, bringing home four astronauts, including one who developed a serious but undisclosed medical condition. The crew—NASA’s Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, JAXA’s Kimiya Yui, and Russia’s Oleg Platonov—returned via a SpaceX Dragon capsule, landing in the Pacific near San Diego. The decision to end the mission early was made on January 7, following the astronaut’s health issue. Though the condition was stable, NASA prioritized Earth-based medical evaluation. The incident forced NASA to cancel a scheduled spacewalk and will delay future spacewalks until the next crew arrives in February. The astronaut’s identity and diagnosis remain confidential.
