Most Guns Used To Commit Crimes In Rochester Are From Out Of Town

The city of Rochester has released a new detailed report that paints a clearer picture of the gun violence in the area. It breaks down incidents, where guns come from and more.  The city worked with the organization Brady United Against Gun Violence to put this report together.  Mayor Malik Evans says that of the more than 2,000 guns studied in the report, which have either been used to commit a crime or were confiscated by police as part of an investigation, more than two-thirds of them came to the Flower City from outside New York state.

“The share of guns from New York state has increased, from one in five in 2022 to one in three in 2025. And more than 60% of these in-state crime guns were first sold in Monroe County,” Evans said. For the report, the guns were traced all the way back to their initial source — either gun dealers or ghost-gun fabrications. Dealers in Ohio, Georgia and Florida supplied the largest share of the guns that came from out of state.

The report also showed that the number of ghost guns privately manufactured using technology such as 3D printers is growing. Before 2023, Rochester police say all ghost guns they recovered were produced from kits sold by a single manufacturer. But since that business was shut down in 2024 due to legal actions, almost half of all ghost guns were privately manufactured, the report found.
