Erie County has passed a new law banning retailers from collecting

Monroe County Legislator Rachel Barnhart said she acted after learning that Wegmans had used biometric identification technology in some stores for safety purposes. She said residents were concerned that this data may have been collected without their knowledge or consent.
With Erie County now leading the way in regulating biometric data in retail, Monroe County officials are expected to consider similar legislation soon.
