Monroe Community College has been selected to join the Metallica Scholars Initiative, a workforce education program of the heavy metal band’s All Within My Hands Foundation. MCC is receiving a $75,000 grant through the initiative and will use the money to provide scholarships, coaching, industry site visits, conference participation, and experiential learning opportunities within the Optical Systems Technology program. The school’s goal is to prepare students for high-demand careers in the optics and photonics industries. MCC is one of 18 schools selected to join the initiative this year. The Metallica Scholars Initiative is in its eighth year, and the new additions bring the total to 93 community colleges across all 50 states and Guam. This year’s expansion includes the program’s largest grant to date at over $3.3 million total. The foundation is also launching its first international workforce program with a $250,000 grant to establish the initiative in the United Kingdom. Metallica frontman James Hetfield said the program started as a dream and is now changing lives. Since its launch in 2019, the initiative has supported roughly 13,000 community college students across the country.
