Gun violence in Rochester continues to fall, with several key measures now well below their 10-year averages. City leaders provided an update Tuesday on public safety following the spring and summer, highlighting declines in shootings and gun-related homicides while also raising concerns about persistent domestic violence.
According to the city’s August report for New York’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative:
- Total shooting victims were 40% below the 10-year average
- Gun-related homicides were down 68%
- Aggravated assault shootings were 37% below the 10-year average
- Total gunfire incidents were down 28%
- Prohibited-use-of-a-weapon cases were down 25%
- Reckless endangerment cases were down 20%
“Gun violence and violent crime continue to fall to levels not seen in more than a decade and outpace the national decline,” Evans said in a statement. Evans credited crime-reduction strategies, technology and collaboration with other law enforcement agencies for contributing to the decline. Many of those efforts fall under the city’s partnership with New York state through the GIVE initiative, which provides funding to law enforcement agencies and focuses on evidence-based strategies to reduce shootings and other firearm-related violence. Despite the declines, Evans said domestic violence remains a significant concern in Rochester.
