Grammy-winning artist Lizzo has been cast as Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Rosetta, an upcoming biopic from Amazon MGM Studios marking Lizzo’s first major film role. Tharpe, often called the Godmother of Rock and Roll, fused gospel with rhythm, blues, and electric guitar in a way that influenced Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Johnny Cash. Lizzo, who is also producing the film alongside Forest Whitaker, revealed she had been fighting for years to get the project made. The film will focus on a pivotal period in Tharpe’s life, including her groundbreaking guitar sound, her secret love for another woman, and her legendary 1951 stadium wedding-concert that drew 20,000 fans. The screenplay is being written by Natalie Chaidez and Kwynn Perry. Tharpe was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
