Indigenous Peoples/Columbus Day Rochester Monday Closings
Written by luma on October 13, 2025
Various places in Rochester will be closed Monday in observance of Indigenous Peoples Day. Back in 2022, Rochester City Council voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance establishing Indigenous Peoples Day. Rochester was the first major city in New York State to replace Columbus Day. Rochester City Hall, Rochester Public Libraries, Rochester Animal Services, Neighborhood Service Centers, R-Centers, and the Honorable Loretta C. Scott Center for Human Services administrative building will be closed in observance of Indigenous Peoples Day. Refuse and recycling collection will be on schedule and the 311 Call Center will be open normal hours Monday. Indigenous Peoples Day is not a federal holiday, but lawmakers in Congress have introduced legislation to make the change. Columbus Day still remains a federal holiday. Since Columbus Day is still a federal holiday, U.S. Post Office locations will be closed, with only priority mail express items to be delivered that day. Most banks and non-essential federal offices will also be closed or have certain hours.
