ICE Detainee Death Sparks Controversy Over Government Narrative

Geraldo Lunas Campos, a 55-year-old Cuban immigrant detained at the Camp Montana East ICE facility in El Paso, Texas, died under circumstances now under scrutiny. While DHS claims Campos attempted suicide and resisted staff who tried to save him, a witness alleges he was tackled, choked, and handcuffed by guards until he lost consciousness. The El Paso County Medical Examiner’s preliminary findings indicated death by asphyxia and classified it as a homicide.
ICE initially omitted any mention of an altercation in public statements. The conflicting accounts raise concerns about abuse in U.S. immigration facilities, particularly at Camp Montana East—a tent-based compound built by a private contractor with no prior corrections experience. Campos, who had a criminal record but was a long-time U.S. resident, was reportedly one of the first detainees at the facility. His family is seeking justice and financial help to return his body to New York for burial. The case echoes broader calls for oversight in immigration enforcement practices and conditions in federal detention centers.
