High earners are twice as likely to steal from self-checkout, with 40% admitting to skipping scans compared with 17% of low-income shoppers.
Men steal far more than women (38% vs. 16%). Despite new anti-theft tech, self-checkout theft is rising, and many justify it because retailers are profitable or because they view self-scanning as unpaid labor.
