George E. Johnson, the founder of Johnson Products and creator of the iconic Ultra Sheen and Afro Sheen hair care brands, has died at the age of 99.

A pioneering entrepreneur, Johnson built one of the nation’s most successful Black-owned businesses, founded Independence Bank of Chicago, and helped popularize Soul Train through his longtime sponsorship.
He died July 6 at his Chicago home following a respiratory illness.
