Gullah Geechee Win Supreme Court Zoning Battle
Written by Site Hub on October 1, 2025
Georgia’s Supreme Court sided with Sapelo Island’s Gullah Geechee residents, overturning a ruling that blocked a referendum on zoning rules. The contested ordinance would have allowed homes in Hogg Hummock to double in size, raising property taxes and inviting development that residents feared would force them out. Community leaders argued the case was both about cultural preservation and voting rights, as commissioners previously canceled a scheduled vote despite a valid petition. Advocates say the ruling empowers the Gullah Geechee, one of the last intact communities of enslaved descendants, to protect their heritage from displacement pressures.
